I'm looking to buy a colour laser printer in the near future and the local computer shop has suggested the Xerox Phaser 6125. The price suits my budget (about 150 GBP). However, looking through Google I'm getting some conflicting stories about using Xerox printers with Linux. Anyone any experience of a good budget level printer? Thanks

Edit: Think I've put this in the wrong category. Sorry!

Back in the early 70s, I got a chance to look at one of Xerox's prototype color laser printers. It was a floor mounted console model that had a projected price tag of $50,000 when you could buy a Mercedes for $6000. It was pretty cool. If I had stayed at Xerox I would be retired.

I have used Xerox printers with Linux for years and had no issues with drivers. They use a standard ppd file, so even if it is not included with cups or foomatic, you can download the file and use any number of Linux print tools to add the driver.

Thanks uteck. Just what I needed to know. I've always used HP and had very few problems but I've read contradictory stuff about the Xerox printer after googling. Perhaps it is likely that people who are happy with hardware rarely ever comment about it.

I have a Phaser 6125 and can confirm it does not work with Linux or OS X which also uses CUPS with foomatic/gimp-print for printing to non-Postscript printers.

If you go for the slightly more expensive Phaser 6130 you'll be fine as that understands PostScript and PCL6.

Don't make the same mistake I did!
