Tal says in his blog that he needs somebody to moderate the forum in order to keep it open. I think a better proposal is this:
Have someone he trusts ask for the keys to the forum for the purpose of doing a database dump to this site. I've already suggested to Jeff putting the old Libranet forums in a closed sub-forum here to serve as archives.
Then Tal doesn't have to worry about it any more, apart from putting up a forwarding message at the forum.libranet.com web address.
Taking this a couple of steps further:
Offer to mirror the libranet site as well, to preserve the support database. Jeff, again?
Ask for permission to reference the Libranet source in our efforts to build a new administration tool. This would eliminate the awkwardness of "clean room" procedures, while the fact it's being done in another language entirely, helps sidestep concerns that we're stealing code.
If Tal has firmly decided that he will not be developing libranet, then I wonder how much value there is to him in the chance to make a clean break?
I don't know who among you is the right person to talk to him about this. I don't know what interpersonal issues are in play, but there has to be someone who can offer themselves that Tal will respond to and consider positively.
My two cents...
