View Full Version : Time to make a proposal?

Tal says in his blog that he needs somebody to moderate the forum in order to keep it open. I think a better proposal is this:

Have someone he trusts ask for the keys to the forum for the purpose of doing a database dump to this site. I've already suggested to Jeff putting the old Libranet forums in a closed sub-forum here to serve as archives.

Then Tal doesn't have to worry about it any more, apart from putting up a forwarding message at the forum.libranet.com web address.

Taking this a couple of steps further:

Offer to mirror the libranet site as well, to preserve the support database. Jeff, again?

Ask for permission to reference the Libranet source in our efforts to build a new administration tool. This would eliminate the awkwardness of "clean room" procedures, while the fact it's being done in another language entirely, helps sidestep concerns that we're stealing code.

If Tal has firmly decided that he will not be developing libranet, then I wonder how much value there is to him in the chance to make a clean break?

I don't know who among you is the right person to talk to him about this. I don't know what interpersonal issues are in play, but there has to be someone who can offer themselves that Tal will respond to and consider positively.

My two cents...

Mike D.

Mike,

Your suggestion has a lot of merit. I think it would be best if Daniel approaches Tal. I am sure he knows him better than anyone. If Tal would like to have any assurances from me, I would be glad to talk with him and make any arrangements he would like.

Thanks, Jeff

Jeff and Daniel,

Might it not be worth a try if both of you were to approach Tal at least about the forum archives? I'd hate to see such a treasure disappear. And if it came down to reimbursement, couldn't the community together chip in?

I talked about this with Tal a while ago. He seemed to want to preserve the forum archives, but does not want to turn it over (yet?).

Dear Friends,

Although it is none of my business, my own belief is similar to that of many here.

I kept all my own posts, as the solutions were always spot on.

Just stupid things, like moving the rgb file for xorg 7 or getting device nodes right in udev were priceless one or two liners from genuine experts. Googling results in lots of talk, but, in the end the ln forum, with people who relly knew and could say so in a few words, was the best.

To lose the archive would be genuinely unfortunate.

Most of us, I am sure, would be willing to chip in something.

All good wishes,

Martin
