The next version of Debian will offer a choice in kernels, Linux or FreeBSD.
I remember reading out kFreeBSD years ago, but it was still in heavy development then. Good to see that it has continued and will now go mainstream.

So does this mean just a different kernel for Debian, or a FreeBSD using Debian packaging?

It's Debian using the FreeBSD kernel, so all the normal Debian commands and packages are there. Well except for the Linux specific stuff and the addition of FreeBSD stuff. I think this will enable ZFS with Debian.

Yes, except that ZFS is far to new for mission critical applications. I'd still prefer LVM + ext3 and the likes any day.
