View Full Version : New vBulletin Software ?
vBulletin released their new upgrade to version 4.0 late last year.
However, vBulletin is no longer owned, operated, or developed by the original developers. The new version when released as "Gold" had literally thousands of bugs remaining to be resolved. Even at this time several hundred are still being resolved.
I did purchase a license for the new version. When it settles down, I may upgrade. For the time being I expect to stay with 3.8 for the foreseeable future.
If any of you frequent other boards that have upgraded to the new version and think that it would be worthwhile to upgrade, please let me know.
Thanks,
Jeff
Good idea; stand pat with what works.
Another forum I frequent went to 4.00 and it has been an ongoing agony.
The new version is a hog for CPU cycles and RAM.

Recently I took a good look at phpBB version 3, installing it on my machine here to test some custom tags for another forum I'm on. I was surprised and pleased with how much friendlier the administrative interface is than vBulletin's.
I haven't gotten into skinning and mods yet, so I don't know if that's any easier to do, but I find I like the slightly slimmer overall feature set, look and feel of the phpBB boards I'm on slightly better versus the vBulletin ones.
FWIW :)
Thanks for keeping the place open, Jeff.

Hi Mike,
No problem keeping the place open. I keep a VPS server going for the challenge and hobby. I have a couple of other sites I run for clubs on the same server. Besides, this is one of the most cordial forums on the net.
Maybe someday a lot of people will discover us and we will have a lot of traffic to keep up with.

Frakkin' spambot jackass. Get bent!
This spammer has joined under multiple names. I was out of town and didn't have a decent link to get rid of him.
He is gone again, but may be back. :(

Be careful what you wish for...
I just upgraded to vBulletin 3.8.6 Patch Level 1
Please let me know if you experience any problems.
Jeff
PS. I still haven't made the decision to upgrade 4.0. The vBulletin web site still reports MANY bugs. The 3.8 series still works well.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. ;-)
