Forum Visitors

I've often wondered about the forums that I visit and the statistics displayed. This forum, for example points out that the most visitors ever recorded at one time was in excess of 700!!! I've noticed these inflated figures on many forums. Why are the figures so high?

Bots visit all of the time. For some reason, the forum must have been visible on a system or message that attracted a lot of automated bots.

In the admin panel you can watch various search engines pass trough. I'm sure that has never been real visitors that even come close to more than a fraction of that number.
