Google has now released a pre-beta (isn't that an alpha?) of Picasa for Linux. I can't try it out right now because I'm at work, so I can't comment on performance at all.
Here's a link to download:

I just downloaded the deb version and it installed without problems. It seems to search everything except hidden files. I say that because it didn't seem to search cache4 in Opera, where there may be pictures of young ladies in their birthday clothes.
I was pleasently surprised when I clicked on Import and selected GPhoto2 Camera. I plugged in my ancient Kodak DC4800 USB cable and it promptly scanned everything I had there and allowed me to import the photos to a folder of my choosing.
For a "pre beta" release, it works remarkably well. I don't know if there was an ancillary damage to the rest of the computer

Yes it is nice. I have installed it also. But I have to say that digiKam does it better. If you add the kipi-Plugins you will have even more functionality and it better integrated.
But Picasa works remarkably well for a WINE emulated software. I wonder why Google (I have heard that they are a bigger company...) doesn't make the effort to write an app like this cross-platform. Moreover I am waiting for Google Earth for Linux.
So what do they do with all their $$$ they saved using Linux on their backends? Picasa led to 200 WINE patches ... that's it. But I do like the interface of Picasa and it worked quite well, I'll keep it as long as it does not phone home and does not display ads between the photos, that is.
