View Full Version : Breakout
My favorite computer game is breakout! ???
Its a nostalgia thing for me. Back in the early 70's when pong was a big deal, Sears came out with a dedicated console game called breakout. That is all it played. Each level was a variation of three different collored bars and a varying size paddle and puck speed. The paddle position along the bottom was controlled by a potentiometer knob on the face of the console. That and a reset button was the extent of control.
It was a big deal back then.
That and Patience Freecell are about the extent of my computer game playing.
My youngest son is dying for an Xbox360. Too bad it's made by Gates and Co.

If they would just release a linux version of "Snood", which is a windows only commercial, but inexpensive game, I could probably coax my wife off here XP box.
Ken, I purchased a copy of Snood for my Gameboy Advance handheld. Its not open source, but it is the complete game in a handheld platform. Is there an open source emulator for the Gameboy Advance? And if there is, could this game then be played from within Linux? I really don't know, I'm just asking the question. By the way, Nintendo has recently dropped the price of the Gameboy Advance by about $20.00 US.

I see several gameboy advanced emulators on the web, but haven't tried one. I don't know how you play those cartridges on the computer. Maybe they have been ripped to files?
This is one of those fuzzy areas of intelectual property laws. As I understand it. If you own the actual game in question, run an emulator one can "theoretically" download an image of the game from some site, not sure which one, play the game legally. I've never tried it myself so I can't be sure this all works, but I have read about it. In fact, Linux Format August 2005 edition has a large article about playing Retro Games on Linux boxes.

Frozen-Bubble is the virtually the same concept. Group 3 or more of the same circles to dislodge them from the bottom of the bunch. You can use pool-style angled shots to sneak them into tight corners. I used to play this as "Bust-A-Move" at a local video arcade. If FB isn't eye candy enough, you can run it in "colour blind" mode with the command-line switch -cb which will add distinctive shapes to the inside of each type of "bubble". I don't think it should be too hard to sell a Snood player on FB. :)
I am so addicted to Frozen-bubble. :D When I install a linux distro, the first game I look for is Frozen-bubble. Very good game play. I'm glad I don't have it on my computer at the office....I would never get any work done. node357, I agree with you, its very similar to snood. Personally I like frozen-bubble better, after all, Snood doesn't have penguins that cry and say "looser" when you fail.

I just tried out frozen bubble. It works on my meager Mini-ITX box. I like it.
I'm not a gamer, but it will be on my regular list.

I'm stuck with Windows again :( I did find a win32 version of LGames LBreakout... that's pretty fun. I laugh every time I lose the ball and the game curses "dammit." :)
My old sears game didn't have any verbalization. I added that myself. :)
