Is this worth the time and effort. Is it really a small footprint ? How stable is it ?

It is OK.
I tried it and was dissapointed. I was expecting something like Xfld (http://www.xfld.de/Xfld/en/index.html)or Zenwalk (http://www.zenwalk.org/).
Xubuntu is a young distro. Maybe it will improve. It runs noticeably slower than Zenwalk. Xubuntu desktop is configured to look like Ubuntu (Gnome) and this is a shame, since the default Xfce configuration is easier to use.
It seems to be very stable and runs OK on a 350mhz w/ 256 mb RAM.
If you want fast and small, try DSL at: www.damnsmalllinux.org

Thanks, think I might give DSL a try. Old IBM A20 laptop, small HD, not a lot of ram. WIFI might be tricky, but ndiswrapper should work.
