Hi, I have just updated the phpBB version that we are running. Besides that I have made the member list, group lists, and user profile pages inaccessable for anonymous users. Spammers create many bogus accounts in the hope that Google picks up the member list, which would increase their page rank rating. While this probably won't stop spammer to create bogus accounts, it doesn't help them either.
Please let us know if there are any problems that are caused by this upgrade and policy change.

Well done! If all boards would act like this spammers would have less appeal to create spam acocunts ...

Is the board setup to require visual confirmation for signup?
I just noticed some recent members seem more interested in promoting teen pr0n sites than discussing Linux... :?:
I have noticed the same thing. They all have strange login names. I will start deleting their accounts. Security is always an issue with forums. :(
I have deleted all of the obvious spammers. If any of you see any I have missed, please let me know and I will delete them and try to block further access. I hope I didn't delete any legitimate users. If so, send me an email or go through the registration process again and accept my apologies.
I have set up admin authorization for new users.

Looks like they're still getting through, somehow.
eg. new 'user' -- xqyegyfso
They aren't really getting through. They have to be authorized by an administrator before they can post. I delete anything that doesn't look legit.
