This book is a great UNIX history lesson, and a good primer for GNU/Linux. The book covers the inception of UNIX, the Korn and C shells, plus a little bit of Bash, as well as GNU Emacs and X11. Although the book leans heavilly on BSD system conventions, the intention is to remain compliant with POSIX.2 standards, which means most of the information put forth can be applied to GNU/Linux systems. It's a big book, and an interesting read that I recommend to anyone who wants more insight on UNIX-like systems and their history.
