As I remember (and I could be wrong), pertaining to v2.8, LN would send the requester the source CD's for a fee. This fee is authorized under the GNU GPL as long as all it covers is the companies actual cost.

IIRC it is also possible to enable the source repositories, and use "apt-get source", at least for 3.0.
