I used to like that ftp program in my older version of LN. I notice it is not in LN3, least not that I can see. I find it at debain.org in an area called "oldstable." I can't seem to make oldstable work in my apt sources. I've downloaded the deb.

Any opions about trying to install this on a mostly stock LN distribution?

I personally would not try it. I feel like a lot of changes have occured in linux in the past couple years and you would be risking it. I think a wiser alternative would be to find a new ftp client. Of course if you try it you should be able to uninstall it also, hopefully cleanly.

AFAIK oldstable should still be up unless something has changed. I still had a woody system until a few months ago I think it was.

I tried installing it on Debian Sid. I seems to work OK.
You need to have libxaw6 (http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/download.pl?arch=i386&file=pool%2Fupdates%2Fmain%2Fx%2Fxfree86%2Flibxaw6 _4.1.0-16woody7_i386.deb&md5sum=b8c9db471d2627cdddd61d7126ec0fb9&arch=i386&type=security) and xlib6g (http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/download.pl?arch=all&file=pool%2Fupdates%2Fmain%2Fx%2Fxfree86%2Fxlib6g_ 4.1.0-16woody7_all.deb&md5sum=e5f2c31077de903fa19b12fb7cf84bed&arch=all&type=security)
installed.

After you have them downloaded install using dpkg:
dpkg -i libxaw6_4.1.0-16woody7_i386.deb
dpkg -i xlib6g_4.1.0-16woody7_all.deb
dpkg -i axyftp-gtk_0.5.1-1_i386.deb
