Im interested in what sort of setup most people are running on their debian box..
Etch Sid etc... Also what does your sources.list look like? The usual? any extra repositories that may help the wayward debian user with their apt-getting..
Maybe tweaks or applications that make life easier for you others havent discovered yet would also be nice to have here.
Im Running Etch on mine with KDE i installed from the netinstall disc
ill post my sources list as soon as i go up to the "office" im on my wifes laptop now which is running ubuntu...

Remember back when I was wondering why people don't always stick to Sarge? Well, I *was* using Sarge up until I broke down and made a dual-boot setup with some other OS. I only used Sarge binary disc 1, the GNOME desktop with the default puddle-coloured Debian desktop wallpaper, and a handful of apps that I consider must-have in my life (game console emulators :S). Oh yeah, and ffmpeg to play the movies I collected back in my dumber days. Basically, I can get along just fine with vanilla Sarge using only "main" repositories (the emulators are grouped under contrib and non-free unfortunately, and I use source code I have saved since older versions of some have less bugs). I'll be going back to that arrangement very soon, too.
All I currently have on my Via M10000N Mini-ITX system is Libranet 3.0.
I have the family computer up front set up with WinXP Home edition and Libranet 3.0. LN is the default.
We only use WinXP when there is no alternative.

We have four computers in the house. All started out on LN 2.7. Purchased the LN 2.8 and finally downloaded LN 2.8.1.
All of the boxes use LN 2.8.1 with the sources list set for Sarge and Etch, though Etch is commented out.
The kernel in the boxes is 2.4.26.
As for upgrades, I do:
a. security -- once per month or as needed;
b. packages -- only when absolutely required.
For a GUI, I run IceWM. My wife and son use Gnome. The fourth box is command line only.
Main packages include Abiword, Gimp, Inkscape, wmweather, Firefox, T-Bird (though I'm a fixin' to dump it and go back to slypheed), Emelfm, Wipe, gpg, gpa, Ewipe, Amsn, several games, bluefish and firestarter.
I have probably left some out, but those are the biggies.

My main computer is an IBM Thinkpad R40 with 512 meg ram, 40 gig hard drive, 32meg ATI Radion 7500 graphics card It dual boots WinXP Pro for only one purpose. To let me download AND execute the firmware updates for my wireless access point/router. As soon as I figure out how to do that in Linux, that partition is gone.
As to my software set up, I initially bought LN 2.8, then 2.8.1 and finally 3.0. Since the LN repositories are not very active any more, I've commented out the Libranet repos and "dist-upgraded" to Sarge. I use Debian's main, contrib and non-free sources, along with Marillat for libdvdcss and LAME, and videolan for the w32codecs. Applications: gedit for editing config files, openoffice for "productivity" tasks, Firefox for the web, thunderbird for e-mail, and of course, Frozen-bubble, Tuxracer, Supertux and nethack, just because. :D Window manager is usually IceWM, but I also play with Gnome.
My traveling unit is a refurbished IBM Thinkpad R31 with a 1.3 gHrz PIII, 512 meg of Ram built-in intel accelerated graphics and a 30 gig hard drive. I run LN 3.0 upgraded to Sarge with the same sources I use for my R40. Same applications as well. The only wrinkle is wireless. I've got unencrypted wireless working, as well as WEP encryption, but I have yet to get WPA encryption up and running. Some day, I'll crack that problem.

Hello!
As a recent immigrant from Libranet Fora I'm looking for advice on apt/sources.list.
Here's what I have now. any suggestions? Please hold your laughter!
Thanks.

This is what mine LN3.0 looked like in the end: KDE 3.5.2 from stosberg, Debian Backports, marillat and some repos for single packages like k9copy, keep, scribus cvs ... you can deduce what was active, I don't have all of them active all the time in order to not confuse my system, when I know that there is some big news in one of the repos I usually activate this one and deactivate the others. Kept my system sane.

Im interested in what sort of setup most people are running on their debian box.
I recently installed Debian Etch and find it very peppy. I use the KDE desktop with it, and it appears to very up to date (3.5.3).
I did find, however, that the netinstall had a serious drawback: it didn't allow me to install grub to the root directory, only to the MBR. I can't imagine why that was the case, but it was. Odd for a modern linux distro to do that.
