I now have a semi (hokey actually) working zip drive.
What I did was add "ide_floppy" (sans quote marks) to the /etc/modules file.
Now I can mount the zip *but* only if I insert a zip disk during initial boot. Further by doing things that-a-way, once I umount the drive I can only eject the disk during a reboot. Most unsatisfactory.
But, things are getting ... slighty better.
