I will be building a new Debian system is a week or so. I'm sure this question will be asked during the installation. Any thoughts, opinions, suggestions? Don't get too technicial on me. Simple answers for a simple mind. The system is for home/office use.

You know, I've been using the Reiserfs for a few years now. And here in southeast New Mexico we get lightning storms from April through October. These storms are whoppers! It is not unusual for us to lose power 3 - 4 times per week. Yet I have never, as in ever, had a problem with the Reiserfs.
No UPS either -- they're to expensive.

There aren't many situations where ext2 is a good choice over ext3. The performance isn't much lower, and the benefit is definitely worth the small price. In case you don't know, ext3 is some extensions to ext2 to add journaling, which greatly reduces the chance of corruption, or lost data. The most noticeable benefit is that if the power goes out (or for some other reason the computer is rebooted without being properly shutdown first), the filesystem can be made consistent in seconds, instead of having to wait through an fsck.
It has been long enough since I last played with Reiserfs that I cannot help you decided if you want to use it or not. I am sure that almost everything I once knew about it has since changed.

You may not notice any speed gain over Ext3 using Reiser other then in benchmarks, the few seconds gained are not noticeable by most users. Also, there have been some speed gains in Ext3 in the last year that boost it's performance and maintain compatability with all the extra tools, like file undelete, recovery and Windows tools to read it. Over all Ext3 has more compatibility and robustness then Reiser.
Here is a thread about other tweaks you can use to speed up Ext3.

I seem to recall back when I was looking for a backup application that I would be comfortable with, some of them did not deal with Reiserfs. That's part of the reason I asked the original question.
Now you guys have me doing homework.
