I was passed this link to building your own portable wireless router that uses the cell phone network for access.

If you go here (for example, or google for something more local to you)

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=5659

You'll find a review of a similar device made by Linksys. Based on linux, full source code and toolchain available. For those of you in the US it supports EVDO cards, and elsewhere a range of UMTS/3G cards (including, soon, for the new HSDPA faster version of 3G)

If you want to use it in your car, it runs from a 12 volt power brick normally and has an internal regulator so might be ok on the sort of 12 volts you find in a car (can vary from 10 to 15). If anyone is interested I'll try one and see if it survives ...

Is this cell phone connection to the internet or a Hotspot connection?

These connect to the internet via the cellular network. A PCMCIA card has the cellular modem in it, the rest of the box is a router/firewall with gui for configuring. Some of them also have a WAN port so you can connect to DSL as well. If DSL is there, that gets used; if not DSL then cellular.

I can only speak for the GSM world. The service will be whatever standard GSM data your cellular operator provides, typically the newer 3G or UMTS service. The cost for the service will depend on your account with the operator. Who pays is determined by the owner of the SIM card that is in use within the router
