View Full Version : vBulletin 3.6.0 Just Released
vBulletin just released a new version with new secutity and feature enhancements. If I had known it would be so soon, I would have just waited a week to do the transfer. :smiley5:
I will probably take care of the upgrade in the next day or so. The forum should only be down for a few minutes when that takes place. I'll make sure no one is logged in before I start.
I feel it is important to stay up to date in order to protect the forum members from such things as the recently annonced AJAX vulnerabilities. (Note: that was a general Java vulnerability, not one specific to vBulletin.)

The upgrade to vBulletin 3.6.0 is now complete. Please let me know if you find anything amiss.

After making a posting the entire forum was marked as read..?
Tina
Tina,
The marked threads are probably a remnant of the upgrade process. After the upgrade, it was necessary to re-thread the threads in the database to match the entirely new set of php files that were installed with version 3.6.0.
If the problem continues with new posts, please let me know so I can figure out how I screwed up.
Thanks for your patience,
Jeff
PS. vBulletin only comes out with a major upgrade every six months or so. If they had mentioned on their forum a few days ago that a new version was imminent, I would have waited for the transfer until after the new version.

It just happened again. The "Forum admin and sugestion" showed new posts but I posted a reply to Daniel in another subforum first, and when I had done that and returned to the front page it didn't show any unread posts/ forums...

If I'm not mistaken, read and un-read post indications are set by cookies. I have not manipulated the boards cookie settings. I will take a look at them this afternoon. I will also post a qeustion on the vb support forum to see if anyone else is having a similar problem. I just read a couple of new posts via the "New Posts" menu option. When I went back to the front page, the forum section icons still indicated that the posts were unread. It may be a related problem.
Could you try clearing your cookies for this web site and see what happens?

The HostGator support site that I frequent ran phpbb2 until a year ago. I like phpbb. It is easy for the users has good cookie handling and post read indications, etc. After they changed to vBulletin, everyone bagan to complain about post read indicators. The HG forum never updates the fact that a post has been read until you leave the site and come back. It has never been rectified. I don't know if it is a vb problem or a site management problem. If it turns out to be a software problem and it can't be fixed, I may look at something else like Invision Board (?).
Thanks, fos....
The standard marking for forums read is performed by inactivity time.
I changed the setting to: "Database (automatic forum marking). That should fix the read / unread problem. (Maybe I should give a hint to HostGator for their forum!)
The documentation did say this option is more server / cpu intensive, I doubt that we will see a slowdown as small as our activity is.
Whenever it gets active enough to make a difference, I'll get a dedicated server. :)
I also set the default timeout to 20 minutes from 15 minutes. For times like last night when I'm writing an epistle, the forum won't timeout on me. Its just as well, I decided not to post my rambling last night anyway, probably best.

The forum read marking seems to be working well now. You must read every thread that you don't want listed as unread. After you have read all of the threads that you intend to read, you can "mark all forum read" via the QuickLinks pull down menu on the top menu bar.
I hope this helps,
