I needed a new laptop, that was both affordable, of a good quality, supported by Linux, and that has a long battery live. I ended up buying a HP nx6110. It is fairly cheap, quite solid, and all hardware (my laptop has an Intel wireless cards) works out of the box on CentOS 4.3. HP even provides an information sheet for installing Linux on these beasts:

A thumbs up from me. Now, let's try Debian and NetBSD... :)

Nice. I didn't see this one but I saw the nx6310 at 1,236.89 NLG (561.276 EUR) or (714.029 USD).

[I guess Windope is included in the price... ]

Let us know how Debian works on this!

My daughter has a Compaq Presario R3000 she has been trying to push on me. It is probably similar to the HP. The only thing I can't get used to is the finger pad substitute for the mouse. Maybe I'll try loading CentOS on it.

I don't think my fingers have enough capacitance. Whenever I try to move the pointer, it doesn't move but when I'm just typing it drifts all over the place. :smiley13: I like the IBM scroll point eraser head that is embedded in the keyboard. You used to seem them on Toshibas but you rarely see them any longer.

fos....I have three Toshibas, they all have that damned proprietary "eraser mouse", but since they all have USB ports, I just spent a couple bucks and bought them each an ifra-red mouse, it works much better than the eraser mouse, it auto-detects and sets itself up and is just a whole buch better than messing with the "eraser"

I prefer the pad over the 'eraser' thingy (which by the way goes by a very naughty name in Norwegian) if an ordinary mouse is not practical. But I hate it when I just brush the pad and the cursor is suddenly somewhere I don't want it to be. So I always ends up disabeling them in BIOS on my laptops.

I wonder why on earth they work in paralell? Why can't they make it so that it enables the pad only if no external pointing device is detected? Atleast as an option?

TinaI think some of that stuff is to make people angry, but, for the life of me, I can't figure out WHY.:smiley5:

Hm, I have no problem on an ageing Acer Travelmate 432C. The Touchpad works in parallel to an wireles optical mouse (Logitech). I never end up accidently on the touchpad ...

Am I that different?

However, I found it really hard to find a wireless mouse that does not come with a dozen extra buttons. I have tested some in the store before I ordered the quite simple one I have now, and I couldnt just grab the mouse without clicking one of those multifunctional hyperbuttons ... ;-)

lol u think an ereaser mouse sucks. i ave this mni-laptop that is almose half size of laptop, light tho , it only offers 400 mhz, OMG my pocket pc's are faster, the battery life does a good job, itll last you 3 hours on average. i cant even watch video on this thing it is so slow, it does support windows xp but i might doengrade to windows 98 in the future. xp is sucking something horrible out of this laptop. sony does a good job at support tho :p thats the good thing.

until i buy new psu's 4 my systems im stuck on this.
