PS. For programming, you want pure text (ascii) text editor. You shouldn't use some use a formatting word processor such as Word or Writer.
For small editing jobs, I just start up VIM. It is simple fast and easy.
I also like Jed, it is simple fast, and easy and your don't have to worry about which mode your are in.
For serious editing / programming it is hard to beat emacs or its cousin xemacs. I really think xemacs has a few more user friendly features but they are very similar. If you are a FSF purist, use emacs.
I was forced to learn vi in a programming class back in 1990. Once you get over the culture shock of its "modes" it is really nice. You will also find it on any nix box you ever go to.
Give it a try, a pretty good tutorial is built in.
Which editor is your favorite?
