SAN FRANCISCO -- Hewlett-Packard is throwing its support behind the Debian Linux distribution, the first major hardware maker to align itself with the noncommercial community-based Linux offering.

HP also announced that unit sales of 1.5 million Linux servers generated revenue of close to $6.2 billion for the 12 months ending in May, 50 percent more revenue than its nearest competitor. And they said that one could not make money with Linux!

This is great news. HP should provide monetary and professional support to Debian. Debian's focus on reliability and stability are paying off.

Thanks for the link.

I heard somewere that many of the devs at HP use Debian, so in a way they are contributing back. This was probably a push by them to make their jobs easier.

It makes sense. There probably more servers running Debian than any other distro. It is not very exciting new for Novell or Red Hat.

HP knows a good thing when they see it.

I have another good reason to support HP. Their business laptops play well with Linux! And they can be ordered with FreeDOS instead of Windows so you do not have to pay the Microsoft Tax. I've got two of them running Linux and the only problem I have is one of them have a Broadcom wireless chipset which is a pain to set up in Linux. When I upgrade, I'll make sure I get a laptop with a Centrino chipset. And no, I do not work for them.

HP was THE class company in previous years. They designed equipment that any engineer would be proud to use. They began to slip while Carly was at the helm but seem to be returning to a quality based business plan. Most recently they introduced the HP-50 calculator which is an HP-49 with a decent keyboard. Their calculator offereings lanquished after they produced the 48-GX.

If they will let the engineers have more input and not leave everything up to the bean counters, they should be ok.
