I used to envy my friends when they had x86 PC's and I didn't. I became aware that I was missing something when Doom became all the rage in video games at my school. I waited a long time to get Doom, and when I did, I was a happy camper. Fortunately, in light of the fact that all of Doom's art, sounds and music are proprietary, there is a functional replacement for the Doom content called FreeDoom (http://freedoom.sourceforge.net). I'm now an obssessive First-Person-Shooter fan, and coupled with a growing need to use and contribute to free software, FreeDoom is a great addition to the list of games I like to play (when my computer BEHAVES). Anyhoo, link there for any first-person shooter fans. FreeDoom is in the Debian repos. There are a number of game engines that can use the FreeDoom content. My favorite is PrBoom. That's "freedoom" and "prboom", respectively. If you download PrBoom, apt will automatically grab depends, including the FreeDoom package. Have fun!

I have messed with Doom games a couple of times.

Does FreeDoom require a control stick, or do you use the mouse and keyboard?

The PrBoom game engine works with the keyboard, mouse and a joystick if you have one. I use a combination keyboard/mouse scheme. A joystick would probably be good too, since there is no vertical axis to worry about (that makes these kinds of games kind of difficult to play with one usually).

Ok, thanks. I'll give it a try with the keyboard and mouse.

It remains to be seen if my pitiful system will run Doom......
