I'm using Debian Etch on a 1gig with 512ram Dell desktop. This is just a basic no frills install. I notice that applications (some) are slow to open, as well as Firefox seems slow to open web pages. I see from top that there doesn't seem to be an unusual amount of apps running, gnome volume manager and nautilus being the big ram hogs. Is there a way to speed things up, or should I consider trying a different window manager.

P.S. Fos, I tried out the calendar, check out March 2007.....

I have a very similar setup, a Via M10000N 1 ghz mobo with 512 mb of ram. I'm running the new version of mepis with FF 1.5.0.5 and gdm. It runs about as fast as any of my beefier computers like an AMD Athalon 3000+ with 1 gig of ram.

You might try lowering you color density to reduce the video bottle neck.

We will be sure to wish you happy birthday next March!

Maybe Firefox tries to look up IPv6 addresses too, and that can take some time to timeout. You may want to try this:

Found another way thanks to the Debian list. Type in 'about:config' in the Firefox URL window, filter on 'IP' and then toggle the only IPv6 entry (right-click and choose toggle). Just did that and sites load much faster. They first hesitate and then load at once.

But Daniel's method must cover all apps...

Edit: Then I remembered Ken Moffat's helpful post about speeding up Firefox. Just go to the following site and change pipelining values...

Thanks for the tips and tricks. Firefox is now much speedier. Now on to reconfiguring X.
