FYI:
Just a note about my new dvd-writer, (a SAMSUNG SH-S182D, cheap from newegg, OEM) which I installed on my old amd t-bird machine running debian etch. I have burned 2 dvd's of backups using gnome CD/DVD Creator from the menu in gnome 2.14. Burned at highest speed without problems.

Installing was just a matter of removing my old cdrom and replacing it with this unit. I have winME installed on this, so was able to upgrade the firmware.

Worked immediately in linux. No setup required. Very impressive. I know 2 burns is not a viable test, but to have no problems is encouraging.... and to have the simple drag and drop gnome dvd creator work is excellent.

Hello,

I bought the same DVD-Writer few days ago but it burns very slowly (0.01x), I can't figure out what's wrong with my config, can you post result of the following commands (where X identifies your DVD-Writer)

$ cdrecord -dev=ATA -scanbus
$ cdrecord -dev=ATAPI -scanbus
$ cat /proc/ide/drivers
$ hdparm /dev/hdX
$ hdparm -i /dev/hdX
$ grep hdX /etc/fstab
$ uname -a

and attach your kernel config file

Thanks a lot

A CD or DVD burner - IDE that is - must be the master drive on an IDE channel. If it is slaved to another drive, it is not unusual to experience much slower writing.
