In the 1970s, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was considered the future of computers. This was before the idea of "home computers" or even "work stations" was common. At the time, the "computer operator" was a person who had been trained to use the machine.

Today, the focus is where the money is, but there are still new developments in AI.
The A.L.I.C.E project is interesting. Richard Wallace has won the Loebner Prize (http://www.loebner.net/Prizef/loebner-prize.html) 3 times
With variations of his ALICE bot:

There are also several projects that use Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (aiml) (http://www.alicebot.org/aiml.html) files and are based upon the ALICE project. Aiml is easy to read and edit.
A chat-bot written in java:

A few more interesting projects based on A.L.I.C.E.

Just how good are chat bots?

Just imagine if clippy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clippy) had been open sourced!

i experimented with the alice bot last year, its very interesting to talk to but gets stuck in loops if you say the same thing
and the article about artificial intelligence beating human intelligence is bull. ai is still just a program but some people think its more. a brain can do more things artistically than a bot ever could.

Depends on how much you feed it ;)

Tabulating numbers was once considered something only a human could do. Long-term memory was once considered something only a human could have.
Are you sure that "art" cannot be analytically synthesized? Well, maybe in a year or two?

The human brain is actually slower than a PC, but it does many more things at the same time than a computer is capable of . . .so far.

...How do you know that I am not a bot?
