I have an almost vanilla L3 install on my main desktop. I have not even dared update with security patches from Sarge. In other words, I am in this a coward.

But I now want OOo 2.0.3 (or even 2.x.x) in order to be able to read the open document format. So I have got to do something.

What, in the forum's estimation, is the best way forward from here? I had thought of using one of the sources lists suggested on this forum lock stock and barrel, including backports (having, of course, first backed up my data ;-) ). Would this achieve at least OOo2 - and hopefully also a more secure system? Or might I be better to download the binary and install manually and continue to cross my fingers and leave the rest alone?

All advice very gratefully received. Hopefully I'll even pluck up the courage to act on some of it.

TIA
Lisi

You can only download the backport of OoO 2.x... in my case it crashed everytime I saved a document. Anything that I want to upgrade from Etch wants to remove all my kernels (on one computer) so it is not an option for me but it might work for you. Try that one first. You don't have to upgrade the whole system to only upgrade OoO.

You can get the Sarge Security Upgrade without fear: they do not break anything.

The best way, IMHO, is to take the the OOorg from backports http://www.backports.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=instructions
The best way if this causes any trouble is to purge the Debian OOorg and take the original packages from OOorg. They provide *.debs that can be installed either manually (dpkg -i OpenOffice*.deb) or with kpackage, or with apt (if you find out how to include local package directories ...).
