nvidia-glx v 8774-1 lists nvidia-kernel-1.0.8774 as a dependency. I'm not sure what the heck that means, since the nvidia-kernels are all 2.6.xx There is a matching nvidia-kernel-source, however, and therein lies the problem:
nvidia-kernel-source v. 1.0.8774-1 from unstable results in an nvidia-kernel module that will not work.
That is to say, to satisfy the dependency, it seems you have to build the damn thing with the 8774-1 nvidia-kernel-source... but it won't work. But if you downgrade to nvidia-kernel-source 8762-2, and build kernel module from that, the resulting combo works just fine. As long as there is an unused, and unuseable nvidia-kernel v 8774-1 on the system to satisfy the dependency... Weird.
nvidia-glx v 8774-1 will work with nvidia-kernel-source v 1.0.8762-2, however, and if you don't have it, you can possibly still obtain it from some repositories, using ftp or wget.
I used wget to obtain nvidia-glx v 8774-1, and it works just fine with the module built from nvidia-kernel-source v 8762-2
Edit: Problem solved. Re-downloaded and tried again, and all worked ok.
