My Avitron 19" monitor decided to die the other day. It's been a good monitor, but now it could be a good boat anchor; it's DONE!! I'm looking at a Samsung 205BW monitor for a replacement, but I have zero experience with LED monitors and their co-operation with X-window or whatever GUI Mepis uses is; I never had a monitor problem with Libranet, so I really haven't messed around with GUI problems since RedHat 5.2 threatened to cause my monitor to burst into flames if my refresh rate was set too high (That slowed down the install, believe me) Any info about using Samsung monitors with a modern Linux distro?

I just did a Google search. The Samsung looks like a nice monitor. The search didn't pick up an problems with configuration. I did find one source that said Ubuntu later than 5.10 shoudn't have a problem.

I'm going to switch to an LED monitor sometime soon, please post your results.

Thanks, fos...

If you are more concerned with working text rather than games and graphics, a CRT will probably satisfy you better than a LCD.

I have yet to find a LCD displayed at the various retail outlets that renders text clearly and sharply, at least to my satisfaction.

I have two LCD monitors: An ageing 15" analog Sceptre, and a 19" digital/analog Samsung SyncMaster 910t

The Sceptre has been reliable, but the color and clarity are not great compared to a good CRT

I really like the SyncMaster. It has excellent color. Text is crisp and easy to read, at 1280 X 1024 75Hz. DVD movies display very nicely on this monitor.

LN3, and now Debian, and various live distros, all work flawlessly with this monitor.

In my opinion, the SyncMaster compares favourably with a good CRT, consumes less power, has a small footprint, and is, imo, easier on the eyes.

As always, ymmv

My kids bought me a 19" LCD monitor a couple years ago. It uses less than 5% of the electrical power of a CRT. It is easier on my eyes as there is no "flicker".

My oldest son claims that CRTs are better for gaming because they have higher refresh rates than LCDs.

The electrical cost over the life of the monitor is a good reason to buy a LCD.

I'm waiting for LEDs to get cheap enough to replace the lights in my house. I'm using those spiral flourescent bulbs now.

Re: "I'm waiting for LEDs to get cheap enough to replace the lights in my house. I'm using those spiral flourescent bulbs now."

I have two old MAG-Lite flashlights. I bought LED modules to replace the original filament bulbs and they are brighter and give much more even illumination. It is nice that MAG-Lite makes the LED's available so you can upgrade an old flashlight.

I don't think it is likely that LED's will be viable as replacements for compact flourescent lights any time soon. Home lighting needs to be defuse. I do expect that LED spot lamps will arrive sooner; these will work nicely in desk lamps and can lights.

// LED home lighting ....

Check out www.ccrane.com (http://www.ccrane.com)

They have a selection of LED replacement lamps. They are very expensive but when power consumption, heat generation in summer, and life span are factored in, they would probably be a good buy. I expect that the technology will only improve with time.

I hve replaced most of my flashlights with mini MagLights. You can purchase a 3 LED replacement buult for $3 at WalMart. They are very bright, water proof, and last approximately 100 hours on two AA batteries. Great for the hurricanes we have here in the SE US.

I have been using the fluorescent bulbs at home for a number of years. They seem like a good option until the LEDs get a little less expensive.

// CRT monitors...

I'm still using a 22" CRT with exceptional resolution at home, mostly due to poor vision. It is a fair heat source and takes up a lot of my cluttered desk. I am looking forward to the day I can replace it with an LCD display.

I still have an old 17" Sony CRT that I paid about $1200 for in the mid 90s. My wife is still using it. I'm almost sentimental.

I'm a confirmed procrastinator, plus I'm cheap; when you add that to the fact I'm lazy, that explains why I haven;t made a move on a new monitor; thank God for my laptop or I'd be completely out of touch; I'll be doing something shortly, the Samsung is still my choice- I'll post my progress and any bumps in the road.
