The more I work with dfs 0.99 the more frustrated I become. It should be considered as an alpha-alpha-alpha release.

Therefore I have removed my How-To. It is a shame to waste expensive server space on detailing how to make a defective product work. I have left only the original introduction which discusses the defects of dfs.

If you want to do a bootstap of debian, use grml. I gave up and started working with grml and am very pleased with it!

Installing SID (Debian 3.1) Using Debian from Scratch 0.99

***INTRODUCTION***

No iso-image is available from Debian for performing a "bare-bones" installation of sid. Instead of gathering the necessary components yourself, you can use Debian from Scratch (DFS) version 0.99. DFS provides all the files necessary for installing a bootstrap version of sid.

The claim that this iso can also install the amd64 kernel is, unfortunately, false. Both of the amd64 kernel images are unusable--a working version of dfs cannot be installed into ram . The newer amd64 kernel is unable to find my network, even if I install a static IP address. The older amd64 kernel crashes during bootup, after having lost the the cdrom somewhere along the way. And the newer i386 kernel, after it is installed into the bootstrapped partition, does not function properly because one of the its modules is missing. To get a workable system, you must install this kernel image *twice* during the original system setup. (Yet, on the other hand, I had no difficulty installing etch amd64 on my computer when using Debian's daily build iso.) Interesting enough, the developer of this iso is also the maintainer for the deb package -- dfsbuild -- that was used to compile the DFS iso.
