I decided to begin developing a chess club administration system after searching the internet and not finding anything suitable in the open source area.

I have been using a commercial package that cost $111. It works well but is limited to the MS Windows environment, is not modifiable, and has severe copyright protections and restrictions that make the software difficult to use. It is cumbersome to have the software at home and at school, which btw is allowed by the license agreement.

I decided to development my own system and ultimately make it available to the open source community.

I have often found open source software at sourceforge.net. My experience was limited to downloading packages that I found useful. While searching their system recently, I decided to try registering my chess club administration package. After the package was accepted for development, a wealth of resources were made available to me for package development.

The resources include not just storage space but shell access, a mysql server, a compiler farm that includes a number of different os and compiler options, web page space, forum space, and file management systems including CVS, SVN, & sourceforges FRS.

It is a great resource for the open source community and well worth our support.

FWIW, I prefer Berlios. They have more relaxed policies, and don't fill everything up with ads. Besides that their servers usually respond much faster.

Thanks, I will check out Berlios. I have already experienced bugs in the Sourceforge system. They fixed the problem but I noticed a number of consistent complaints on their bug tracking system.

I have applied to register a project with Berlios Developer. It has not yet been approved. I am looking forward to trying out their system if my project is approved.

At this time, they have a much smaller group of developers and projects than Sourceforge. They also have a crude forum for the developers. I don't believe Sourceforge has anything comparable.

I do find it interesting that the Berlios site is operated with SourceForge project management software. :)
