View Full Version : Dell - $399 server!
While reading an article on serverwatch, I saw an add from Dell for a $399 intro server. It even has a free upgrade from a Celeron processor to a new dual core. It is bare bones with an 80GB SATA hard drive but still quite a buy. The offer is only good until Nov. 2.
I may take the bait.

Could you post a link? :)
I tried posting the link in the first message. For some reason it didn't respond. This link is from the server page. It is the small tower on the left. There are only a couple of days left. Be sure to go to the modify page. There is a free upgrade for a dual core intel cpu.

Thanks Jeff, I hoped it would be a 19" rackserver. Since I have been playing with the thought to colocate for a while.
No joy on the rack server. They do have one for $699, though. Pretty agressive pricing.

The $699 19" is a pretty good model. Though there is a store in NL that sells relatively cheap used rackservers with more high-end hardware (e.g. dual CPU and SCSI configurations).
I doubt that Dell is placing premium hardware in these entry level servers. I'm rather partial to WD Raptor HDs with their 1.2 million hours MTBF and five year warranty.
With a RAID 1 setup you can have 600+ invested in the hard drives alone.

My workstation has two 36GB SCSI hard drives and 1GB RIMM ECC memory, dual Xeon CPUs for about 350 Euro. But yeah, the smallest SCSI disks are about Euro 190 a pop these days, so if you want more than two disks in a RAID set, the price is going to be high. But that will be the case anyway, since you'd have to hire at least 2U rack space (two disks is pretty much the maximum for 1U).
Anyway, this Dutch site has some interesting rackservers. For example:
- Compaq Proliant DL360, 1U 19"-rackmount server (2x Intel Pentium-III 800MHz Socket-370 FCPGA2, 512MB RAM (4x 128MB PC-133 Registered ECC SDRAM), 2x 18.2GB Hotswappable U3W/Ultra-160 10K RPM SCSI-harddisk, Remote Insight board (225289-001) "Lights-Out Edition, Integrated Ultra-160 LVD SCSI Smart Array RAID-controller) for Euro 389
- Dell rackserver (2x Intel Pentium-3 1.0GHz Slot-1, 1GB ECC SDRAM memory (4x 256MB), 4x 9GB Ultra-2 (U2W) 10.000RPM hotswappable SCA SCSI-harddisks, Onboard Ultra3 (Ultra160) SCSI AdaptecŪ AIC-7899 (160MB/s) RAID-controller with 128MB cache, 2x 330W hotswappable powersupply) for Euro 399.
Of course, these are not the latest and greatest machines. But they have some nifty hardware (ECC memory, SCSI disks) for fair prices.

I Do hope they lower the price on the rackmounts sometime soon, ive been looking to buy a few dell rackmounts to fill up my empty rack in my closet.
I might just endup buying some 19'' cases and jsut custom building them since my game servers usually dont need much hd space or speed jsut about 8 gb of ram and a dual-core amd and im set for life :smiley16:
When i buy computer server hardware it usually comes from ebay and its something i can pickup so its cheap and i cant get ripped-off :P

jsut about 8 gb of ram and a dual-core amd and im set for lifeFor Life? Few years ago, a guy in Redmond said that 640K of RAM was going to be plenty enough...:smiley4::smiley8:
Then again... it depends on how old you are...
If you're 93, then, maybe. :)
Look at razors! They now have what? 5 blades?
Quadruple-core 128bits AMD would be nice...
Beat me up, Scotty! :smiley6:
My learning curve stopped at dual blades. I hear some blades even have batteries! :)
I could use one of those quad cores that are coming out next year, though. If I can't be multi threaded, maybe my computers can.

Nice to see you back Red.

My learning curve stopped at dual blades. I hear some blades even have batteries! :)Yeah! The Gilette "Mach V" I believe it is called. I am not too comfortable with having those shaking a razor blade under my throat... Are these computerized? With MSRazor maybe? Then one won't see "the blue screen of death" but the "red spalsh of death"...
I could use one of those quad cores that are coming out next year, though.Next year? Really? I was saying this as a joke... like "in a few years"! Gee, fiction is now behind on reality... :)
Yep! Both Intel and AMD have quad cores in the pipeline for next year.

PS. My chin is so tough at my age I could shave with one of those manual grass cutters my grandmother used to have. :)
