Hi gang,

I've been trying for the last couple of days to update my package info in synaptic and the debian repositories are timing out.

I see on the debian.org site that they've recently released an update to Sarge. Am I running into swamped servers?

Here's the output of Synaptic's index download process...

ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz: Data socket timed out
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/main/binary-i386/Release: Data socket timed out
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/contrib/binary-i386/Release: Data socket timed out
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/non-free/binary-i386/Release: Data socket timed out
ftp://security.debian.org/debian-security/dists/sarge/updates/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz: Data socket timed out [IP: 128.101.240.212 21]

I've been updating semi-regularly since changing my apt.sources file and upgrading to Sarge. This is the first problem I've had. What's up?

Thanks,

Mike D.

I think they are preparing for the new release of "stable", scheduled in December 2006.

They are eventually going to temporarily "freeze" the repositories.

Same thing happened before "Sarge" was released.

Have you tried using a mirror? http://www.debian.org/mirror/list

Thanks Tina, Andre.

I finally managed to get through to all the repos. I had to try several more times, but before that I had to get my kids to stop doing any bandwidth hogging activities while I tried to connect. My daughter's video stream caused me to lose the "attention" of the server at least one time I had gotten in. I could see it happen by watching the lights on the network switch. :smiley13:

It seems my connections to the servers were kind of "fragile."

So, a new stable release? Cool. I wouldn't mind upgrading to some newer versions of the multimedia stuff, and maybe the newer version of Wine will be more in line with what they are supporting right now. I'd like to try to get a few windows games running. :smiley8:

How much do you think will be left of Libranet and adminmenu when we're done upgrading?

Be well,

Mike D.

Well, It will essientially be "Etch" (testing)... Expect to see some difficulties at times to access the servers until the release. Mostly in the last weeks since they prepare the servers for the... overflow... that the new release will generate.

As far as Libranet is concerned, I think I'm going to try to install Etch from scratch when it is released. At the worst, I will have to kick my butt to learn more about how to do myself what "Adminmenu" was doing...

You'll be very surprised, because Sarge feels kind of ancient compared to the new stable.

Probably nothing, but why bother?
