Any last.fm users that I can add as friends? Or maybe we could even make a "LinuxAgora" group?

For those who haven't used last.fm: it is a "music social networking" site. It works great with Rhythmbox and Amarok. It should also work with XMMS + a plugin.

Hi Daniel

I'm redalpha3 on last.fm too but I can't imagine you will be interested in my "old folk's music". Heh heh

Well, we share at least one common taste: CSNY ;).

Benjamin: The latest audioslave CDs are great :).

Can you find any instrumental bluegrass and classic rock over there?

Hi Fos. The way that I use last.fm is by allowing it to sample my listening habits with my own digitised music collection (I use Amarok). After a week or so of use it gets to know my taste in music, favourites and so forth(much as Amarok does) and then it offers up a number of streaming audio options which play similar music to my tastes. It also connects you to "neighbours"(people who have similar favourites). I find that it expands my repertoire of "similar" musicians. As to individual genres, it allows you to search for tags. Instrumental Bluegrass might be one of these, and it will stream a limited number of examples of this. I think it is a good method of hearing new material or stuff that you didn't know existed and I've bought CD's from various outlets on the strength of last.fm recommendations.
Edit: You will certainly find Classic Rock there!

Thank you, Pete. Sounds like a good place to try.

Hi Daniel, Hi Redalpha

added you both to my friend's list :-)

I liked the 1st Audioslave but not the 2nd one, but now on the 3rd, it seems that they really have found together. The 1st was exitigly new and driven by the two colliding "worlds", the 2nd one was too ... hum ... undecisive? for my ears.

Pete, ELP crafted music for the eternity ... Music like this never gets outdated. It might become forgotten, but it never sounds outdated. Sadly, people do no longer have the time (or possiblity) to really _listen_ to music.

I guess with the todays' habits of the Music industry the success of bands that have success staritng with their 3rd album will become increasingly rare. Today it's in and out make it or break it. The best albums of this year came from long established bands IMHO. I'll think of exceptions from that rule ...

I tended to play and listen to stuff which was familiar. I listen to it as opposed to having it on in the background. I've found that I've listened to a greater variety of stuff since I stared to listen to last.fm.
Unfortunately, I've found that the Linux player that you can download has not always agreed with the distro of choice! Looking for an audio-friendly debian-based distribution which copes with my system. Kanotix fails on boot-up! I've even considered Demudi. My present ubuntu system seems to hate audio!

Hm, I use Amarok on Mepis 6.0 and everything works like charm. Amarok has built-in last.fm support, just give it your username and psswd and listen being online ...

Mepis 6.0 has yet to let me down. Did you use the script "automatix"? This is the Ubuntu-Multimedia-enabler ... grabs a lot of stuff, so beware of your download volume. But you have the full control over what is being downloaded and installed, so give it a try. It is not really officially recommended (rather the opposite) but many many users are really happy with it.

Of the distros I've tried, Mepis 6 is about the best.
<Whinge-mode on>I am tiring of the self-emasculation of these offerings to keep away the software-patent police. Necessary, I know but bloody irritating. The difficulties I've had playing mp3s or bbc audio/video would make frustrating reading with offerings from RedHat, Suse, Centos,Mepis, Ubuntu, etc. all driving me to distraction.<off> Still, it could be worse. I could be stuck with Windoze!

LN 3.0 was much better at downloading streaming audio / mp3 than Mepis. Alas, I now use Mepis because it supports my hp printer easier.

I still miss LN! :(
