whole filesystem is replicated inside one directory

I was working on some files on a floppy drive (using Kile, I think). When I was all done, I tried to unmount the floppy and could not. I received a message that the floppy was busy, but I was finished working and all the applications I was using (knowingly, anyway) were closed out. The CPU load meter in the bottom right corner of my screen was maxed out.

The only process in ps -A that looked unfamiliar to me was something called pdflush. It was listed twice. I tried but could not kill it. Even in a virtual terminal, logged in as root, I could not kill it.

I logged out. When I logged back in, CPU meter was still maxed out and pdflush was still running.

Lacking any better ideas, I logged out and powered down.

When I next powered up and logged back in, I found that most or all of my filesystem structure was duplicated inside my directory called /home/ryancwrf/DATA/work.

I don't think lib, etc, dev, sys, tmp, usr, var, opt, or bin belong in there. EmelFM shows me that everything that should be inside each of those is indeed in there. I also have the "regular" copies of all those directories, in the expected place, under / . Should I delete them? Or is this a case where I should use "file system check" to repair the damage?
