Like this:
$ growisofs -use-the-force-luke=dao -dvd-compat -Z /dev/hdx=myiso.iso -speed=2

Thanks Bob,
I'm developing protocols to backup server partitions on a regular basis and I'm trying to get around using a gui.

The man page for growisofs is actually very good.
You might also be insterested in scdbackup. It is a set of scripts that have been designed for backing up to CDs or DVDs.

scdbackup may be just what I'm looking for.
Thank you!

This is late in the thread, but i believe that cdrecord does have a patch available for dvd burning.
And all the over the top messages about 2,4 and 2.5 kernels, unofficial version etc are just rants that can be ignored.
Though i did have a time getting it to 'fit' in a an etch package build. Were as it just sloted in to woodys. And i haven't tested it for dvds' either.
Curious not to find cdrecord being mentioned here ?

The main author of cdrecord had purposely built cdrecord so that it would not work with DVDs. He was trying to sell a package "cdrecord-ProDVD" to enable DVD burning. Other hackers were also working on cdrom tools. When you use a Kde or Gnome gui to burn a DVD, it is most likely using the growisofs scripts.
In May of 2006, the author had released his cdrecord-ProDVD as freely licensed

You can find some of the story here:

But,
growisofs seems to be the best toolset for the job.

Howdy bhobjj,
Yes, i'm aware of the Shilling aspect. But there was an unofficial patch written by someone involved with Mandrake, though unmaintained.
Even comments generated by the program hinted that extremely bad things would happen attempting to burn dvds', and those embedded in the source, seemed to border on a disturbed mind. But i can understand that ... it was none the less, a very good working tool.
I liked the way the author (Shily), in a straight forward and clear way, provided clarification on the relationship between ata and scsi transports too. He was quite correct. And i tend to agree with his resentment to being denied by a couple of major distros. He should have been accredited. But the idea of having to register a 'key' to use his alternative , one that would require renewing on a regular basis, was just to much of an exercise in control to be bothered with. And the patch was available for woody packages. Though, hard to get to fit in Etch (grin),
I found that REAME via ...

Cdrecord creates home-burned CDs/DVDs with a CD-R/CD-RW or DVD recorder. It works as a burn engine for several applications. Cdrecord supports CD/DVD recorders from many different vendors; all SCSI-3/mmc and ATAPI/mmc compliant drives should also work. Supported features include: IDE/ATAPI, parallel-port, and SCSI drives; audio CDs, data CDs, and mixed CDs; full multi-session support, CD-RWs, DVD-R/-RW , DVD+R/+RW, TAO, DAO and human-readable error messages.

Looks like the patch isn't required any more.
Thanks for your links, and yes, i have heard of growisofs, which does, as the name implies, sound like an efficient way to deal with iso images.
I'm just pecking away at remastering exercises at the moment, so those links/suggestions will certainly become useful over the coming year, i would think. Currently i'm just glad to have at least gotten on top of qemu (grin).
Thanks Again, :)
