The new VIA boards look very promising, especially with the on-CPU crypto accelleration (VIA Padlock). I just bought a second-hand Pentium IV machine as a home server, but I plan to use a VIA board for my next server.

Believe it or not, I have been using an M10000N based system entirely for about eight months. I have found it very reliable, SMALL, and QUIET.

I have stuck with Libranet since it supports the Via motherboards nicely.

The built in crypto has spotty support from what I have read so far.

A couple of links that may provide info are:

BTW, Via has a new version of the M10000N that has modules for interfaces that may or may not be needed. Not only is it as cheap as $119 (US) it has improved reliability.

The RNG and AES accelleration should be supported well enough:

slightly off topic.
The VIA 32 bit mini ATX is a great choice for thin clients, small, quite, no fan.
