Ok i got an install of windows vista about last month. IT seems nice and fun to work with but what do you do when you take apart a european car....You go ahead ans tweek everything possible. IT confused me at first on how to work with vista. Although it has all of the security updates it has tis weird layout to it. Some windows are transparent and such. Their is a classic view option but the start meny it just changed too much.
I doubt many people will learn to use the vista. Id rather jsut stick with windows xp pro.

Are you using a released version?

Besides not being open, etc. Look at the release notes of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0 beta, and you will see that Microsoft is now behind times:

* Xen everywhere. I tried this, and this is really cool. Their virtual machine management tools are very easy to use. E.g. you can just enter an URL where CentOS/Fedora/Red Hat is mirrored, with an optional kickstart file, and it will do a net install in a Xen domainU.
* Very refined SELinux policies. Virtually all your daemons get protection.
* Stateless Linux.
* GFS/GFS2 (a clustering filesystem).
* Compiz/AIGLX (Vista is kinda on par here).
* Frysk: always-on, distributed tool for debugging and system-analysis. (also in 4.x)
* Systemtap (a DTrace-like tool) (also in 4.x).
* Dogtail (GUI test tool)
* A complete opensource Java development environment, including the Eclipse IDE, and the Tomcat application server.
* Tighly integrated strong encryption of volumes.

As far as I can see we have a headstart compared to Vista in many areas. And the next Windows version will probably be there in five years. In the meantime, there will be about two new versions of RHEL/CentOS that will leave Windows far behind.

Linux used to be pioneering in the server and development area, it is now slowly getting ahead on the desktop. In a few years time, GNU/Linux will have the desktop attraction that OS X has now.

So, no, Vista is not hot. RHEL5 will be, Debian Etch (maybe +1) will be.

Bad stuff like DRM would be reason enough not to use Vista:

One good new addition is the "Power Shell", so a Windows user will be able to do some of the things that people have been doing for many years with the Unix shell:

Yes i am using the cs1, i signed up for their beta brogram about a year ago.

Vista takes up alot of system process also, ive been ruiing mepis on 1 of my thre systems and I do things alot more "efficient" than on windows vista, i uninstalled vista and went back to the xp pro i hated it so much. although i know how to use windows alot faster, its performance that takes the cash with linux. Microsoft is rushing to do things and im sure their overlooking some things on vista, but the linux community is more..well laud-back but get things done and dont overlook anything. If Microsoft could just get a better way to manage things they would probably kill off one or two linux systems. whenever The linux community finds a way to run all windows files somewhat correctly..linux will be more than worldwide. I dont believe you can run any linux programs on a windows system. I dont reccomend buying windows vista, i doubt any schools will update to it knowing it takes upalot of system to run. and if i was designing an O/S id aim at it the schools... Btw i heard a rumor that their going to include Halo 3 or 2 with most vista systems..i doubt it though

They buy it, because they don't know that they have a choice. When they buy a new PC in 2007, it will have Vista pre-installed.

I bought 4 new computers last year. When I set them up, I booted from a CD and partitioned the drives. None of these machines has ever run Windows, But they came with WinXp.

I just buy hardware and try to avoid the MS tax.

It is unlikely that public schools will ever switch from Windows. Too much momentum. Linux is clearly better and cheaper. When you spend tax dollars the cost doesn't really matter much. The bureaucratic information system managers aren't savy enough to learn Linux. They would rather bury their heads in the sand and stick with Microsoft and Novel.

Looks like an opportunity to do a little Linux promotion... (http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2006/12/07/tech-msvistabusinessesnotready-061207.html)Most business computers in North America do not meet the minimum requirements to implement Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system software, according to a new report.
The analysis released on Thursday by the Toronto-based Softchoice Corp. found that half of the business PCs being used in North America today are incapable of handling Vista's needs.
About 94 per cent are not able to run the premium version of Vista, the company found.
Maybe some of those so-called IT systems managers should think about getting their heads OUT of the sand, or wherever else they seem to have stuck them...

Makes you wonder why Ballmer keeps bleating about suing Linux users.. Gee, do you think he has a motivation to spread more FUD?

btw, I emailed the CBC about that article, asking them why they neglected to mention the obvious alternative: Linux
