I just saw this story about BeleniX (http://www.genunix.org/distributions/belenix_site/) which is a live CD with OpenSolaris and KDE with a hard drive installer if you want to install it. I'm going to give it a try on my test box.

There is also the Nexenta project:
http://www.gnusolaris.org/gswiki
It is still in alpha. The idea of Nexenta is to use an OpenSolaris kernel with the Debian package system.

There use to be one or two other opensolaris distros that sprang up I thought. If the kernel was GPL I would switch asap!

Maybe if he has his own distro, Schilling can make sure that cdrtools are only used the way that God intended.
