I guess I just lucked out. My Debian Etch is running/working just fine. So sorry so far there is no "help please" to look at. My Dell laptop is happy and so am I.

Is it released... or you upgraded?

This is a clean Etch install that I have kept updated/upgraded. I tried to take LN3 to Etch, but lacked the knowledge to fix all the problems.

Now that December has come and gone, any word as to when Etch will be released? I've put all of my tinkering on hold waiting for this thing.

In 2007 :).
Though, with the Debian project you never know.

Now that the file corruption bug that was in the kernel is fixed, they might release soon. This only affected certain filesystems under special circumstances, but Debian policy forbid ignoring it. There are other things holding it up, but this was the big one.

Etch is very close if I have judged correctly. I've downloaded and installed daily builds from December and Jan2, and they've worked. Plus they finally have PPPOE working from the installer (or it took me a while to figure this out). There are slight differences from build to build, but in general they work. (For example, CUPS in one build allows access to browser configuration, another doesn't.) Clean installs all. Libranet is unfortunately too old now.

Where do we go from ... Libranet? I meant.

That has been dead for over a year. It is time to find a new .nix

As much as I would prefer to use Libranet, I'm using FC 6 on my desktop and CentOS on my experimental server. I'm looking forward to CentOS 5 in a few months.

I've been playing with FC6 and Mandriva 2007. Last night I got WordPerfect 8.1 to run on FC6, so it now rates a partition in my boxes.
My how-to is on the Corel WP/L news group. If anyone wants I'll post it here; it's reasonably simple.

I've been playing with FC6 and Mandriva 2007.
After a minor soundcard disaster with Linux Mint and then Ubuntu (a pattern emerges), I decided to mess around with Mandriva 2007 as I had a DVD from Linux Format Magazine. It seems to work well but if ever I wander off to look at other distros, i always miss apt-get/synaptic. For all that Mandriva is meant to be easy to maintain, I think I might understand their software acquisition system by about October. I need Debian 4 urgently, particularly if I can get it to configure my monitor/screen resolution! <self-pity mode off>
I would definitely like to see your WP setup posted here. I still have WP 8.1 out in the garage. I always liked WP. It just became too much trouble to solve it's dependencies.

While waiting for Etch I thought I would check out some other distros. Since I am on dial up, I looked to pick up a cd with a few distros on it. Well, I found a site 'easylinuxcds.com' and my eyes glazed over. There were over 80 available, even LN2.8.
I'm going to take the plunge and order up a set of Etch (testing cds) and see what happens. Since I do not operate on the bleeding edge, I should be safe. Right? ;-)

I doubt you'll be disappointed with Etch
I've been using Etch/Sid now on three different boxes. It's outstanding, imo.

After a minor soundcard disaster with Linux Mint and then Ubuntu (a pattern emerges), Can you elaborate a little on this, please? I was getting interested in Linux Mint for my multimedia box.
Thanks.

Certainly. Not sure it would apply to you though. I have onboard sound but have fitted a SoundBlaster card in a slot also. Having tried lots of distros, all of which recognised the SoundBlaster, Mint recognised them both, even though the onboard sound was disabled in the bios!. It wouldn't have been a problem but Mint chose to install and use either sound card at random. No amount of configuring made much difference and so I retired from the battlefield to fight another day.
I think the latest Linux Mint 2.2 has come out in the last few days and would certainly recommend it for the multimedia box. Unfortunately, in my case, sometimes the little irritations push me over the edge!

I have the same thing on an ASUS board. I might give it a try anyhow. Honestly I installed the SB card without even having tried the onboard soundcard. Maybe it is as good and I may not need the SB. It's a five channels card just like the SB.

My machine has both built-in sound and an audigy card. With a stock kernel, the built-in card is detected, although I can configure the sound system to ignore it.
I think this is because the kernel loads the module for the thing, and since the BIOS is set to a non-plug 'n play OS, the kernel picks it up.
When I compile a kernel, I make sure to deselect the particular module for the on-board sound.
If the on-board sound module continues to be loaded, you can blacklist the module in /etc/modprobe.c/blacklist
AndreL, I'd suggest trying Mint with the built in sound card. ASUS makes good products, and I can't imagine that they would put in an inferior sound card. Also, one of the beauties of single disc distros like Mint is the fact that installation of the base system is quick. Also, since the Mint CD is also a Live CD, you can try before you install. And yes, Red Alpha3 is right, a new version of Mint, (Bianca) has been recently released. I have a friend who swears by Mint.
I have also got Debian Etch loaded on my test box (hp nx6110 laptop.) If you have broadband go to the Debian web site and download a net install cd from the daily build releases. That's what I did, and except for wireless networking, everything on my laptop was recognized and worked out of the box. An amazing change from my past experience installing Debian.

Yeah! I'll give it a shot. There is some darn proprietary stuff that I need for this one. :smiley2:
