I keep getting a connection refused. I opened port 5900-5902. When I start the server I get "new x desktop is localhost:1" Is this what I put in the vncviewer to start a session ? I also tried to use the ip address...still get connection refused.

If you append the :1 to the host name or ip address you type into the client (eg: myserver:1), then it should "just work". If not, and you're sure you've got a route from client to server, then you'll have to start looking through the config files ...
Alternatively, and if you have the java client connection enabled in the server (can't remember if that's the default) then you can browse to http://server:5800+display_number, so in your case that looks like 5801
I don't have vnc running here at the moment, but could do so if you're still stuck
