www.hostgator.com (http://www.hostgator.com) now allows SSH access on all accounts according to their sales page. You have to request the service and send a photo ID to their sales department. This service was added at the same time they increased the bandwidth and storage space on all of their products. FWIW, their are increasing all existing customers to the new levels as they upgrade the server hardware.

I have been a customer for over two years, their service and support have been very reliable.

SSH access makes things much easier :). My hoster provides SSH access, I installed Mercurial (a version management system) on my account. I can now push, pull and clone from my repository over SSH or HTTP, and have a web front-end that others can access.

SSH access is a recent addition for non dedicated accounts with HG. They didn't even announce it on their support forum. An observant customer pointed it out.

A previous host I was with provided SSH access for an additional monthly fee. Unfortunately, they oversold their servers and went belly up.

Back in the early 90s when the WWW was penetrating the consumer market, I was able to purchase a "shell only" account at a considerable discount. Back then service was billed by connect time. Gopher was also the "browser" of the day and it was character based.

SDF (http://www.freeshell.org) still offers a Gopher service/server for their users. Nice to play with, though I am glad we have HTTP and web standards these days :).

Is this true? mmm. I haven't notice such access. Well if this is true, there must be a good sign on this. This only means that there are more accounts and growing with hostgator.
