It's not so much the sluggishness; it's the not-displaying-pages-unless-one-repeatedly-hits-refresh that annoys me.
:smiley7:

I'm currently installing swiftfox (http://getswiftfox.com/).

Let's see how it responds

Well, that was... swift.

It does seem a good deal quicker. So far.

I'm posting this using swiftfox, ostensibly optimized for my AMD 64
I'll be comparing it with iceweasel for a few days

If you open a second Firefox browser, it takes minutes to load. When you try to close it before it finishes thrashing, it still takes forever. Firefox is a major memory hog! It still beats IE.

I dislike it, but it is the only opensource browser to speak of besides Konqueror. IMO the same contras apply to OO.org.

You might wish to try this:

In the address bar type "about:config"
Scroll and find:
(1) network.http.pipeling
(2) network.http.proxy.pipelining
(3) network.http.pipelining.maxrequests "20"
Toggle both to "true"
Find or type as new integer:
(1) nglayout.initialpaint.delay "0"

It seemed to speed up Firefox for me. And, as I recall, someone had posted on this forum (somewhere) a link to where I got this information.

Still, Firefox is a hog, which is a huge put down on swine.

Well krp's suggestions sure helped. Still not a barn burner. I was thinking of Opera, but I never could get it to play videos on the net....

Thanks for some good ideas and discussion....I rely on getting good info from this forum and this was no exception.

It's been only a few hours, but so far I'm impressed with Swiftfox's performance.

I haven't had to pound the 'refresh' button yet! :)

If you decide to install it via the script, you may have to do a bit of post-install tweaking --

First, check if there are any errors by launching it from a term.

In my case, it complained about not finding a java plugin at a non-existant location: /lib/i386/libjavaplugin_nscp.so
First, I symlinked the java plugin in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins:
# ln -s /usr/share/lg3d-jdk/jre/lib/i386/libjavaplugin_nscp.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins then
# ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins /lib/i386creating /lib/i386 symlinked folder

The scripted install of swiftfox had problems finding other plugins, even though they were now symlinked to /lib/i386, so I symlinked them from the mozilla plugin folder to /opt/swiftfox/plugins folder

There's possibly a way to do this via about:config or something, but I didn't feel like rooting around blindly, and Google was uncharacteristically unhelpful.

Hi,

I use the browsers Epiphany and Galeon. They are faster than Foxfire . They do contain fewer bells and whistles. As I use a dialup connection I forgo the b&w's for speed. Anybody tried these besides me?

I have used Galeon. It thought it was OK, but it did not tempt me to abandon Konqueror.

Puppy Linux uses SeaMonkey which is the Mozilla Browser rebranded. It certainly seems less bloated than Firefox and is faster.

Here is a link which may help:
ubuntugeek (http://www.ubuntugeek.com/speed-up-firefox-web-browser.html).
