I am with slicehost now:

http://www.slicehost.com/

Very affordable, developer-oriented, and Xen is good for our environment ;). They offer Debian, CentOS, Ubuntu, and Gentoo. They have a nifty remote console, so you can fix things if you screwed up too much :) [1]. And you can reinstall/switch OSes as much as you like.

[1] Who didn't accidentally kill SSH once, or made the packet filter rules a tad to restrictive :).

The $59 package from LayeredTech is already sold out. :( I did get in on the deal. I'll post let everyone know about the quality and service once it is setup and I have had time to try it out.

My new $59 server was finally operational when I got up this morning. Layered Tech took a little longer than their 72 install window.

I selected CentOS as my operating system. They installed the BARE minimum install. I am having to install all services via yum ---- everything.

It performs about the same as my experimental server that I have set up at home except it has 5 static IP addresses available.

It does seem like a good deal for a completely dedicated server.

I'll post again as I get it configured for my needs and implement the security measures that I'm aware of.

My lifelong learning quest continues.

What about reboots and a remote console? I have both now, and I can't really live without :). (Very handy if you screw up a packet filter rule.)

I enabled SELinux this morning and then tried to reboot via the console. The server crashed. No ping, no response anywhere.

The 1st level tech referred it to a 2nd level tech.

Reboots cost $50! 2nd Level Techs are $85 per hour.

You can "rent" a kvm over IP for $50 per hour. I mentioned that I would rather use the kvm option than pay $50 for a tech to reboot the server.

I'm not sure I can afford this economy server farm.

Wow, those are insane prices! A KVM over IP switch is not that expensive.

// KVM over IP not that expensive.....

It is by the hour! :(

Sorry, I meant that buying and hosting the devices should not be expensive for them, IOW they are making a lot of money off it.

Daniel,

I knew what you meant, I guess my humor was a little obscure. :)

A NOC engineer has determined that the CentOS load on my server is not compatible with SELinux. ???

This is my first experience with a dedicated server, I guess I should have thought to ask for SELinux support. I still think co-location is my best option but this deal was cheaper than the minimum co-location fees that I have been able to find. I can install a server that satisfies my needs much cheaper than I can lease one with the same capability.

They didn't charge me for a reboot. He also said they would do a reload to include SELinux compatibility at no charge.

For me, one of the big selling points of CentOS & RedHat is their support of SELinux. I would have thought they would install with SELinux support by default.

Actually, Layered Tech's support and response time has been very good. Though it took a couple of hours to do something I could have solved myself with some hands on, I am still impressed.
