I set out to install LN3 on a friend's (somewhat elderly) computer but had to substitute LN 2.8.1.

Can I alter the sources.list as I have my own (which is now basically Sarge with an LN3 face (nice!)), but substituting "woody" for "sarge"?

TIA

I think I read somewhere that support for Woody has been terminated, so I do not know if the repositories are still available. What type of problems did you have with 3.0 on your friend's computer. Did the system hang just before the graphic installer starts? If that is it, then there is a way to proceed. I could not find the link to the instructions, but the general steps is to bypass the graphical installer and use the ncurses (2.8.1) installer instead. I'm sorry I can't remember the details, but it requires selecting something other than the default boot option. As the LN disc boots pay attention for any installation options that may temporarily flash on the screen. Sorry I can't be more specific. Good luck.

LisiI feel impelled to enquire: Why LN 2.8.1?
Also, Sarge is becoming very 'stale', so why use the incredibly archaic woody? I doubt if there are any woody repositories still available.

My experience with woody, (I still have the 8CD set!), was not joyful...

Doubtless you are aware Etch/testing is very near to becoming the official Debian stable release.

Unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise, I recommend you consider a daily build Etch netinstall. It installs very nicely, even on 7-8 yr old hardware.
If the machine is seriously low on RAM and/or disk space, investigate one of the smaller teeny, but modern distributions, such as DSL. Links can be provided if you are interested :)

Woody is still available but it's no longer maintained. Sarge will be maintained for quite some time still.
I remember back in the days running LN2.8.1 upgraded from Woody to Sarge and it was quite painless as long as I stuck to using a 2.4 kernel (2.4.27 IIRC). Trying to run it on a 2.6 kernel broke everything that made it 'Libranet'. That was when I decided to chuck it and go for pure Debian since I could not afford LN3 at the time (which I can't say I'm sorry for today).

Anyway, if you really need to run LN2.8.1 it should work with Sarge but personally I'm with Bluesdog and would recommend Debian Etch.

Not sure if this should be a new topic...but...it seems related, so...I'm wondering if I will have to do like several people here have suggested & give up libranet for something else like debian etch, or will I be able to continue to do "apt-get update/ apt-get upgrade " & be ok. so far the few things I've used adminmenu for have still worked, but don't know if that will continue. Here's what I've got running now.

libranet 3.0

This is my apt sources list that I've kind of worked out from a few different posts on here (& after 2 or 3 trashings & re-installs...lol) fortunately I've not lost anything from my home partition:

## Libranet APT Configuration
## File: /etc/apt/sources.list

## Removing, changing, or re-ordering entries in this file will prevent use of
## the Libranet archive. Un-commenting deb-src entries or adding additional
## mirrors is acceptable.

deb http://www.backports.org/debian/ sarge-backports main

# Security
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free

# Multimedia
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main

This is my apt preferences file, again worked out from some different posts on here, I ended up just kind of guessing about what the numbers should be, & it seems to be working ok...( I'm open to suggestions on changes that would be better):

I don't really care about being on the bleeding edge, so as long as my stuff is working I'll probably stay where I'm at, unless things change when etch becomes stable, which brings me to the questions: looking at the way my sources list is written, will I just start automatically tracking etch when etch does become stable ? & if I would give up on libranet & install debian etch, could I just install that in my / partition without disturbing my Home partition, or would everything need to be re-configured ?

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place & for the "too many" questions...lol...

As much as LN 2.8.1 and 3 were top notch in their time, I think it may be time to just move on.

FWIW I am using Debian Etch on a 7 year old IBM laptop with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

And don't forget there is Ubuntu/Kbuntu out there that also works extremely well.

The choice is yours, but I really do think LN is just a memory for most of us.

I have never yet managed to use *Ubuntu and have it Just Work. So far LN has never failed me. Twice I have had to move down to an earlier version. It Just Works. When I find something that something else can do as well, for what I am wanting to do, I shall change. I have Sarge on my laptop and have tried Etch. I am not skilled enough for the installations not to be rather rough.

I had problems with FC6 (fine for me,but lots of minor things not quite right on my test system), but have downloaded CentOS 4.4 and shall try it when I have a moment - but I would still prefer to put other people on a distro I have been using for years and know well.

will I just start automatically tracking etch when etch does become stable ?yes you will. Sarge will only work if you specify 'sarge' in your sources. When Etch becomes stable, sources that say 'stable' will the grab the Etch packages since they will then be in the stable directory. So if you don't want to upgrade to Etch, rename 'stable' to 'sarge' in your souces.

could I just install that in my / partition without disturbing my Home partition, or would everything need to be re-configured ?Yes.

During install, select your current /home partition as /home, but do not format it.

You will undoubtedly have a bit of tweaking to do, but virtually everything should work ok

.. and you know where to come for help!
