If anyone here has a CompUSA near them and some other electronics store, chances are the CompUSA will be closing. They took down their list of stores that are closing, but it seems that the store locator http://www.compusa.com/locations/default.asp does not list them. I know of at least 3 in the Chicago area, and none of them are listed anymore.

I liked this store as it had good prices and a nice selection of parts. Fry's is better, but a further drive for me, and Best Buy sucks for selection and price.

Time to do some shopping this afternoon. :)

. . ., and Best Buy sucks for selection and price.

Best Buy is also in the news:
". . .there are plenty of consumers across the country who have been tricked into thinking they were looking at the live Best Buy Web site when they were actually looking at a site showing only in-store pricing. It's also clear that Best Buy created two identically appearing sites, both of which were intended to be used by employees to show to customers."

Did my shopping yesterday. I was disappointed that the discounts were not bigger, only 10% to 20% for most items. Computers are only 5% off. The discounts might get better next week I would hope.

Also, their Macs are on sale also, so if anyone is looking at the fruit of temptation, now might be a good time to take a bite.

I'm sorry to see CompUSA go. The one I go to out by NASA is on the closing list. I would have thought that one would survive. I have noticed that their stock has been dwindling over the last year or so. I hate to say it, but I can purchase from a mail order place here in Houston and have it shipped across town cheaper than I can go to CompUSA and purchase the same item in person, if they have it. Directron has a much better selection of the components I tend to purchase.

I have been tempted to purchase Apples many times since the early days. Apples have always had the glitz and glamor. I have always been put off by the price and the closed nature of their hardware. For me, the ability to fiddle with the hardware is a primary concern.

Besides, I could never get used to their keyboards - the have the home bumps on the D and K keys rather than the standard F and J. I have also felt awkward with their retarded one button mice. :)
