I remember a thread about this in the old Libranet forum, and looking at the new releases at SourceForge today, I saw that version 3.7 of Freesco is out.
Freesco is a mini distro designed to run from a floppy, but can run from about anything. I used it as a dail-up server so I could make a lan and share the dial-up connection. It would disconcert the phone after a few minutes of being idle and auto dial when a client to access the web.

It also has other packages that can be installed like samba and web and ftp servers, and it is very easy to install and configure. If you run if from floppy, just turn the write protect on after configuring it, and now it can't be hacked.

http://freesco.sourceforge.net/ Their main page is not updated yet, but the project page on SourceForge is current.

Back in the early 90s, just before Mark Williams Co. and Coherent shut down, there was a version of Coherent that came with a book that introduced Unix commands. It was on a single floppy and ran on a 386 and above. I think I still have a copy out in my "garage" archive.

The original Coherent ran well on a small 286 system. Their K&R C was actually a very nice compiler and produced very compact code. I was sorry to see them go. There was just no way they could withstand the introduction of Linux. They had a number of very talented programmers.

same here! Unbelievably easy to setup and worked great. Later used it at school to block off our mini-network from the real world while still providing access to the internet for it.
