Would a monitor with following spec come to any physical harm if connected to
a m/c that thought it was a monitor with a max resolution of 1280x1024 / 76
Hz?

Diagonal Size: 21"
Viewable Size: 20.0"
Dot Pitch / Pixel Pitch: 0.27 mm
Max Resolution: 1600 x 1200 / 75 Hz
Max Sync Rate (V x H): 160 Hz x 96 kHz
Video Bandwidth: 240 MHz
Factory Preset Resolution Modes:
1600 x 1200 / 75 Hz
1280 x 1024 / 90 Hz
1152 x 870 / 110 Hz
1024 x 768 / 120 Hz
800 x 600 / 140 Hz
640 x 480 / 160 Hz

Any alteration of the X1186XF-4 file would mean a complete rewrite of the
monitor and screen sections, given what is currently there, and I would like
to give the OS (Knoppix 5.1.1 installed on the HDD) the chance to find it for itself before I do any rewriting - it's not my m/c.

TIA
Lisi

Since the refresh is lower then the max it can handle, it should not be harmed. Might have a flicker to it perhaps.

I agree with uteck. Its my understanding that damage can occur if you try to drive your monitor to higher resolutions and or higher refresh rates than it natively supports. But running at lower specs should not cause any problems.
