I use gnome-ppp (i.e wvdial) for my dialup connection.
I would like to modify the dialup string, the one that says ADT + phone mumber etc.
but I cannot find the config file for wvdial..
Anyone know where it is?

I'm not on my home machine.
I think it should be in:
etc/ppp/peers/wvdial
The gnome-ppp program could possibly override this with a user configuration file in your home directory nested somewhere inside of the hidden directory:
./gnome2/

Try also:
/etc/wvdial.conf
locate wvdial
In Ubuntu I configured my modem via:
sudo pppconfig
lurch

Oops. The file you want is a hidden one in the Home directory.
.wvdial.conf
