I have been visiting a chess game site for the last year or so. The site has been written from scratch by Webby, the owner. If you are interested in online chess, you should give it a try. Unlike many chess sites, there is no subscription fee. Webby is a talented programmer.

There was a recent article here:

about the various chess engines that are available.

I used to play chess with my oldest son. By the time he was he was 11 yrs old, I could now longer win against him. He was quick to understand other player's strategies. He may lose a game, but he remembers how he lost. He won several awards, etc.

But for me, the computer chess engines are a challenge. I don't play often enough to remember how to win!

The problem with playing chess in Linux are not the engines, but the interfaces, IMO: they are very limited and not very funny.
The best ones are (obviously) for Windows: the Fritz series and Chessmaster.
However if you happen to have a Fritz 8 CD, it will install with Wine or Crossover. Then adding a more recent engine should be reasonably easy.
