Staples has a $50 rebate this week for WP Office X3 Student and Teacher Edition.

I installed it under CrossOver Office 4.2. By and large it was a smoother installation than under Windows.

WP X3 works, although there are some issues that are noted in the CrossOver Office web site: you must install the included Internet Explorer 6 first, disable the intelligent file management feature, and make do without being able to save in any other file format other than .wpd.

The Presentations app appears to work, although I have not stress tested it yet. Quattro Pro X3 does not run at all, and I was unable to install the bundled version of Paradox because the "accept license" button did not function.

I opened a .wpd file and printed it successfully. A .wpd file saved in WP X3 opened normally in WP 8.x, but not in Star Office 8, which does open WP 8.x files.

Update: I downloaded and installed the 30-day trial version of Cross Over 6.

This works too, although there are some things to note. For Word Perfect Office X3 you must use a Win 98 bottle template. After the application selection window appears, nothing seems to happen after clicking the appropriate button. Close the window and the "Install Shield" window, which is completely covered by the first window, appears and the installation can proceed.

After installing, I have to start WP X3 two times; nothing happens the first time, and on the second start a minimized window appears. Maximize it and WP X3 is visible.

The previously mentioned caveats still apply, however: disable "intelligent file management", and save to other than .wpd file format is still not supported.

Update: I bought Cross Over 6.1 Professional.

I installed ABBYY Fine Reader 5 OCR. Like WP, it needs a copy of Internet Exploder installed. Fine Reader 5's version of IE did not install, so I used the one from my WPO X3 CD. Fine Reader 5 then installed and runs. Of course, it cannot control a scanner, since Windows OCR requires TWAIN drivers, but it can import and OCR an image.

I scanned a document using XSane, saved the image file as .png, then opened it in Fine Reader 5. The OCR was flawless. ( Fine Reader recommends scanning at 300 DPI.)

NB the current version of Fine Reader is 8; I do not know if it works under CrossOver.

If anyone needs to run WP X3, I suggest using CrossOver Office 5.0.3 rather than the most current release: 6.1.

With 5.0.3 WP X3 starts normally. On my Core 2 Duo 1.8 gHz box WP X3 starts as fast under Libranet 3 and CrossOver 5.0.3 as it does in Windows.

NB Cross over 5.x and 6.x appear to depend on glibc 2.3.2.
