Anyone know of a soundcard that works all over and has high sound quality?

Creative now seems to have stopped supporting linux.
the newer cards from C. are badly supported, many things that can be done with an older Audigy card does not work at all with the sbp2 alsa driver.

I'm considering an
M-Audio Audiophile 2496, one of the best (affordable) sound cards around.
Does anyone know how this performs under linux?

In addition to hi-fi quality i need a card that works with everything, skype, can take sound from my tv card etc.

Terratec Aureon 5.1 USB Mk2, affordable (I paid 50 EUR ... approx 65 US$).

It's an external card (USB) with optical In and optical Out. Performs well here! If it is only for "feeding" really good speakers, you could give this one a try ...
